STC439 switch should you buy genuine Lucas or Britpart?

A comparison between a genuine Lucas boxed STC339 switch and a Britpart STC439 switch. Main question is it worth to spend the extra cash on the genuine Lucas Land Rover Defender part?The pictures do show almost no difference between the two items. Both operationally they feel the same. The handle of the Britpart item is more smooth compared to the Lucas one.

in general Britpart items are rated as not as good as genuine items and should be avoided but this particular part does look 99% identically. Operation is the same and only durability has not been tested. But the Britpart item will definitely not look bad in your vehicle.

Noise Killer Engine Blanket

Just arrived the new Noise Killer Engine Blanket. This noise deafening blanket is replacing the old one as listed in the previous Noise Killer post. The blanket supplied via the Dutch Noise Killer company, some years back is probably a non genuine (imitation) one. Noise Killer UK has been so kind to supply the new one F.O.C. Thank you!

New blanket has been fitted and it does reduce the 200Tdi engine noise.

Britpart Fan Belt ETC7939

Last night by replacing the bad Britpart PAS box we did spot another failure.. The Britpart Fan Belt ETC7939 a self proclaimed “quality part” did not last. The fan belt on the picture has been used for less than 15.000 km. Normal fan belt lifespan is MUCH longer. Another fine example of badly engineered Britpart Land Rover Parts.

STC8384E Steering Box RHD 4 bolt type replacement

Jsut arrived the new 100% genuine Land Rover STC8384E power steering box (PAS) for RHD Land Rover. This one is going to replace a (still under warranty) failed Britpart one. Replacing with another Britpart unit is just no option. The previous genuine parts unit lasted for almost 10 years and never leaked. Replacement untit by Britpart, fitted last May started to leak badly within 5 Months. Waste of money, time and energy.

We are planning to fit this new box the coming week.

Repairing Land Rover 200Tdi turbo heatshield NTC4833

The Land Rover 200Tdi turbo heatshield NTC4833 made out of some heat resistant & reinforced material. Due to vibration and the extreme heath of the turbo it will sooner or later break into pieces. Replacing this particular part has become a very expensive option, costs: more than 100 Pounds! So we opted for repairing the heatshield with Sonax exhaust repair paste + glass fiber reinforcement.

The whole procedure is very easy DIY, just make sure you’ve removed all dirt and grease. Cut pieces of glass fiber to the correct length and apply the Sonax past together with water. e.g. by using a garden sprayer. Best is to use gloves to avoid the paste sticking to your skin. But using your hands is the easiest way to apply the paste….

Time will tell if this repair job will last but right now it’s looking much better than before.

Update 21-09-2011:

Unfortunately this repair did not last. For about 1000km it has been fine but right now the shield is like before we started the repair job. So a waste of time and energy but at least we have tried to fix it this way. More durable will be either a new $$ expensive fibre shield or DIY metal one.
